Jens Rydström

Professor

Background

I graduated in History at Stockholm University in 2001 with the dissertation Sinners and citizens: Bestiality and homosexuality in Sweden 18880-1950 (University of Chicago Press, 2003). I was recruited to Lund University as Lecturer in Gender Studies in 2008. I was promoted to Associate Professor (Docent) in history at Stockholm University 2010, and to Professor in Gender Studies at Lund University in 2012.

Ongoing research and teaching

At present I am leading three projects. One dealing with the AIDS epidemic and Civil Society in Sweden 1982-2000 (with Lena Lennerhed at Södertörn University); one about sex workers’ organisations in Scandinavia 1977-2017; and one investigating LGBTQ* activism in Denmark, Norway and Sweden 1948-2018  (with Signe Bremer, Lund University, Peter Edelberg, Copenhagen University, Tone Hellesund, the University of Bergen, and Elisabeth Lund Ingebretsen, University of Stavanger).

My teaching focuses on gender history, history of sexuality, and source criticism.

Introduction

Jens Rydström is Professor in Gender Studies and Associate Professor in History with a focus on the History of Sexuality and Gender History.

Research projects

  • Movements in stormy weather: Nordic sex workers’ organisations 1976-2017 (funded by Lund University and the Ottar Fund, RFSU). Ongoing until till 2020
  • When the state won’t do: AIDS and Civil Society in Sweden, 1982-2000 (funded by the Swedish Research Council). Ongoing until 2020
  • A Nordic queer revolution? LGBTQ activism in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden 1948-2018 (funded by Forte and the Swedish Research Council. Ongoing until 2022
